Asp catapillers....How can I get rid of them?

What is something that will make Asp catapillers go away? They have a white fuzzy fur with orange antenna's. I am highly allergic to them and they are all over my oak tree.

Can you help?

Asp catapillers....How can I get rid of them?
I have never heard of someone being allergic to a caterpillar, especially one that isn't in direct contact with your skin? Why not just avoid the oak tree until they are gone?

I stand corrected....after I answered your question my curiosity got the better of me and I did a bit of research, only to find that these are a pretty serious problem in the south of the US. I found a very informative article you might want to read, though it doesn't include ways to get rid of the pests.

A spray on insecticide is usually effective against most insects, especially something soft bodied like a caterpillar, so I would recommend something in the permethrin family. We use a bottle that you can attach to your garden hose and spray your entire yard down, but we use it for mosquitoes and ticks. This would work for caterpillars too I'm sure. Hope this helps.
Reply:seven ,or cabyral
Reply:Based on size of tree use carbofuran granules (different trade names like furadan, carbofuran etc) ,just sprinkle 50 cm away from base of tree on soil and pour some water over. Tree will absorb it within 24 hours and kill all worm.

Be careful, it is very toxic...10 meters away from water bodies, dont touch with plain hand, place away from children.
Reply:with the description of orange antennae I don't think you are seeing asps, but maybe one of the tussock caterpillar....with any of the caterpillars how effective treatments may depend on the host tree...many times oaks are too large to treat for such pests....but any general insecticide that you can treat the tree with will help...treating the leaves with liquid Bt products will also be effective, but again you may only be able to treat a small portion of the problem
