Do you need to know visual basic in order to learn ASP?

I am trying to learn server side programming. I am good with JavaScript, HTML, and CSS and want to expand my horizons. Or do I even want to go in this direction at all, would I be in more demand if I learned PHP or Perl or the like?

Do you need to know visual basic in order to learn ASP?
Hello!

No you do not need Visual Basic knowledge to learn ASP.

It does seem to me that PHP programmers are much more in request than ASP programmers, but it may just be my lack of exploration into ASP programming...

ASP has the benefits of being somewhat easier to code/learn (it has an extensive built in framework).

ASP also has the downside of requiring a Windows server, which is more expensive because of licensing fees.

PHP on the other hand is completely free/open source, can run on Linux and Windows servers, and you can basically do anything you want with it...

It is mainly a preference between the two, as each has its own subtle advantages and disadvantages.
Reply:No, you do not need to know VB to use ASP. ASP and VB are completely independant of eachother, although VB can be used in implementing ASP.

ASP / JSP / PHP are all somewhat overlapping technologies. They can all achieve the same results but each has its advantages/disadvantages.

I'd recommend learning all three. For my personal experience, I prefer PHP for it's simplicity and widespread use throughout the internet. (many free PHP scripts are available)
Reply:ASP is the older type of programming, somewhat like many of the current PHP pages. Traditionally, this is written using VB / VBScript languages, but can be written with JavaScript.

PHP would be more demand than ASP. Open Source wins for many people plus it is more platform independent.

If you are in the learning stage, you should focus on ASP.NET rather than ASP assuming you plan to go down the Microsoft path.
Reply:No you dont need VB for ASP. C# helps more in learning ASP but again, its not required. I may be confused too

Actually, for ASP.net, you need C#

For ASP, you dont need anything. Since you know javascript, it may help :)
Reply:You do not need to learn VB for ASP, if you wish to learn asp, i'd recommend Wrox Beginning ASP 4

However i'd prefer you start learning PHP, (with frame work CAKE PHP)...
